Setting Up the Right Conditions for Healing to Occur
What is often overseen in the medical world is the role of the relationship that is established between the patient and the health practitioner. If the relationship is built on trust and integrity, the chances of healing and recovery of illness to occur are actually increased. So much so that if you were to have two different health practitioners formulate the exact same diagnosis and give the exact same treatment, but one patient was untrusting and wasn’t comfortable with their health practitioner, that patient would incur different results from the treatment. It is much more likely that the patient who trusted their health practitioner would receive a better treatment outcome than the one who didn’t, even if the diagnosis and treatment were the same.
Therefore, establishing a healthy relationship between client or patient and practitioner is an essential ingredient in any healing practice.
If one is to treat oneself, this is not such an issue because one has already established some level of trust with oneself, right?
If one is receiving treatment from a trusted friend, the chances of a beneficial healing treatment are high because the relationship between the two people is already established.
If receiving treatment from a third person, a stranger or an unfamiliar health practitioner, the potential for a beneficial treatment are initially unknowable. If a good rapport is established early on, a beneficial outcome from the treatment will be more likely.
There are many ways you can create the right conditions for healing to occur, from establishing a good rapport to setting up a healthy and calm environment. Here is a list of things to consider when setting up for treatments:
- The Space
The space is to be clean and have minimal distractions (e.g. no TV on, away from computers and clutter, etc.).
- Sound
Music can be helpful to create a relaxing mood in a room in a short amount of time, and is often encouraged. However, be sure not to play the music too loud or if it doesn’t seem to be working for you or the patient, be willing to turn it off and be content with environmental sounds.
Focusing on sounds in the environment is one of the fastest ways to induce a medative state, which is conducive to healing of any kind. Take a moment to tune into the sounds in the environment and adapt the attitude of listening, like you were listening to music being played or the sounds of the ocean, because when we listen in this way, we are not looking for an end point or for it to finish. We take on a position of listening for the sake of listening and we become the witness to life and its expression in the form of sound. And in this way, no sound is out of place; it all becomes the orchestra of life and it becomes easy to relax into it.
- Visual
We want to remove distractions. Allow the eyes to relax, and allow yourself to gently gaze into space.
